Weekly Planning: The Key to a More Calm and Productive Week

HAILLEY GRIFFIS

Happy Monday 🌞

This week I’m coming off of three days in person in Boulder for Buffer’s Marketing leadership onsite. As a fully remote team, having that in-person time is always extremely valuable. If you have more questions about that, please reply with them, and I might share a bit more in a future newsletter or article.

If you’ve ever had an intense week where all of your routines are changed because you’re traveling, you’ll understand the value of a reset and just getting everything feeling really good at work and home. That was my desire yesterday — my focus was on making sure we had groceries, cleaning the house, and spending time planning for the week ahead.

Some people say this planning for the week should happen on Monday when you’re back at work, but Sundays just work better for me. I don’t want to spend Mondays easing into the week and deciding what I’ll work on; I want to be ready to hit the ground running.

So here’s what I do on Sundays to plan for the week ahead:

  • Reflect on the previous week
  • Review my goals, projects, and priorities
  • Review my calendar to make sure it supports those priorities
  • Review my to-do list to make sure it reflects the plan

This check-in usually takes me about 20 minutes in total, and it is such a grounding way to start a new week.

Here’s step-by-step how I do weekly planning

I hope you have a lovely week ahead. As always, feel free to reply if this sparks any thoughts or questions.

See you next week,

Hailley

  • Last week, I found myself recommending Ryan Holiday’s book Discipline is Destiny again; I finished it in 2022, so it wasn’t on my 2023 books list, but it is a book I still think of regularly.
  • A bit of a throwback — here’s a post I wrote 4 years ago for my 4th anniversary of working at Buffer. I’m coming up on 8 years in just over a week and have been spending some time reflecting on the journey.
  • I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on brand messaging pillars for Buffer. Here’s one resource on messaging frameworks that I quite like. Please pass along any others you’ve enjoyed!

That's all for this newsletter! Thank you so much for subscribing. Reply anytime you want to chat. ✨

I'm happy to offer my writing and this newsletter for free, but if you're so compelled, a cup of tea is always appreciated! ☕️

HAILLEY GRIFFIS Happy Monday 🌞 Ten years ago, my email was added to Buffer’s website when I joined the team. My personal email has been around for about 20 years. You can imagine it’s not hard to find — and it’s probably been sold more times than I’d like to think about. With all of that, there’s almost always something in my inbox. If you joined recently, hi 👋 I’m Hailley. I’ve always created systems for my work (as a Marketing leader at Buffer) and for my life (as a remote worker and mom of...

HAILLEY GRIFFIS Happy Monday 🌞 I’m in the middle of hiring season at work right now — something that doesn’t happen often but always absorbs more time and energy than I expect. Between reviewing candidates, scheduling interviews, and keeping my other projects moving, hiring reminds me why one system in particular has become non-negotiable for me: weekly planning. If you joined recently, hi 👋 I’m Hailley. I’ve always created systems for my work (as a Marketing leader at Buffer) and life (as a...

HAILLEY GRIFFIS Happy Monday 🌞 One of my goals this year is to have more 100% days. That's what I call a day when I've hit all five of my daily habits. I love these days because I usually feel like I'm operating at my best and showing up as my best self — more energized, more present with my kids, more focused at work. The thing is, I can't just hope my habits will stick. I need something that keeps me motivated and accountable. For me, that's tracking them. And that's exactly what I started...
