Happy Monday 🌞 I recently brought up the concept of ‘horizontal networking’ in an interview, and I was reminded that this term isn’t popular. I don’t know where I first came across it years ago, but the concept stuck with me. Instead of trying to network with people who are ahead of you in their careers or more senior than you, horizontal networking is the idea that you should focus your energy on networking with people who are at the same level as you. The reason is simple — you have more to offer each other. You will learn a lot from someone going through similar career struggles as you. It’s been very true for me when I’ve been vying for a promotion at the same time as my peers and shared helpful lessons or when I’ve tackled new challenges at work and found a connection who was going through the same thing. I’m not saying it’s not useful to network with folks who are more senior than you as well; each type of networking has its place. But remember that when you network horizontally, you will all grow together. Eventually, you will all be the more senior folks, and you are already connected. → Read my full article on horizontal networking and ideas for where to get started If this sparks any other career-related questions, send them my way! I’m reflecting a lot this week as I’m approaching my 8th anniversary of working at Buffer. :) I hope you have a lovely week ahead. As always, feel free to reply if this sparks any thoughts or questions. See you next week, Hailley
