Horizontal networking: One of my favorite career growth tools

HAILLEY GRIFFIS

Happy Monday 🌞

I recently brought up the concept of ‘horizontal networking’ in an interview, and I was reminded that this term isn’t popular. I don’t know where I first came across it years ago, but the concept stuck with me.

Instead of trying to network with people who are ahead of you in their careers or more senior than you, horizontal networking is the idea that you should focus your energy on networking with people who are at the same level as you. The reason is simple — you have more to offer each other.

You will learn a lot from someone going through similar career struggles as you. It’s been very true for me when I’ve been vying for a promotion at the same time as my peers and shared helpful lessons or when I’ve tackled new challenges at work and found a connection who was going through the same thing.

I’m not saying it’s not useful to network with folks who are more senior than you as well; each type of networking has its place. But remember that when you network horizontally, you will all grow together. Eventually, you will all be the more senior folks, and you are already connected.

I hope you have a lovely week ahead. As always, feel free to reply if this sparks any thoughts or questions.

See you next week,

Hailley

HAILLEY GRIFFIS Happy Monday 🌞 Ten years ago, my email was added to Buffer’s website when I joined the team. My personal email has been around for about 20 years. You can imagine it’s not hard to find — and it’s probably been sold more times than I’d like to think about. With all of that, there’s almost always something in my inbox. If you joined recently, hi 👋 I’m Hailley. I’ve always created systems for my work (as a Marketing leader at Buffer) and for my life (as a remote worker and mom of...

HAILLEY GRIFFIS Happy Monday 🌞 I’m in the middle of hiring season at work right now — something that doesn’t happen often but always absorbs more time and energy than I expect. Between reviewing candidates, scheduling interviews, and keeping my other projects moving, hiring reminds me why one system in particular has become non-negotiable for me: weekly planning. If you joined recently, hi 👋 I’m Hailley. I’ve always created systems for my work (as a Marketing leader at Buffer) and life (as a...

HAILLEY GRIFFIS Happy Monday 🌞 One of my goals this year is to have more 100% days. That's what I call a day when I've hit all five of my daily habits. I love these days because I usually feel like I'm operating at my best and showing up as my best self — more energized, more present with my kids, more focused at work. The thing is, I can't just hope my habits will stick. I need something that keeps me motivated and accountable. For me, that's tracking them. And that's exactly what I started...
